Hofstra University’s MPH Culminating Experience: Transformative and Inspirational                   Corinne Kyriacou, PhD, MPH Three times a year (May, August and December), the MPH Program hosts a Culminating Experience (CE) Symposium to showcase graduating students’ final research and program development projects.   These projects are developed over a 6-12 month period while the student is enrolled in the Culminating Experience course. While in this course, students apply the theory, research design, analytical and writing skills they’ve acquired throughout the program into a research or advocacy project.   Students receive guidance and feedback from MPH faculty and community-based professionals; however, the CE project is directed by the student and determined by their interests and strengths. Taking a project through the many phases of program development requires students to complete a series of activities. Culminating Experience students complete training in best practices

Exploring the Feasibility, Benefits, and Challenges of Implementing an Intergenerational Time Bank on Long Island: Phase I

Exploring the Feasibility, Benefits, and Challenges of Implementing an Intergenerational Time Bank on Long Island: Phase I Lauren Doodian, MPH ‘17, CHES & Corinne Kyriacou, PhD, MPH, Hofstra University Population aging necessitates new thinking about how to create responsive, accommodating and vibrant communities. Previous research on older adults offers guidance about the effectiveness of models that focus on increasing socialization, community connectedness and engagement. Time Banking is one such model that offers a mechanism for increasing socialization among marginalized groups while also building sustainable, inclusive communities.   Through a process of exchange, people swap time and skill instead of money, rendering everyone both a producer and a receiver of needed services. Time Banking is a low-cost solution to the economic and social challenges older individuals face that threaten independent living. The purpose of Phase I of this study was to establish a

Opioid Crisis on Long Island by Kerry Meyers

Image
For my culminating experience, I created a policy brief addressing the opioid crisis on Long Island. Illicit use of opioid prescription drugs has led to millions of deaths due to overdose in recent years in the United States, constituting serious public health concerns. On Long Island specifically, there were as many as 600 opioid related deaths in 2016, breaking a record that year and rising since. Opioid-use is rampant through Long Island communities, varying only slightly by socioeconomic-status, race, ethnicity, age and gender. The policy brief was geared towards local politicians, community organizations and other leaders in the field that have power to influence change. The brief outlined the most important and relevant findings of current research in a concise and coherent manner, that would be easily accessible these policy actors. It also included information gathered from qualitative interviews with key informants. The information presented focused on current best practic

MPH Potluck Spring 2018 by Mobeen Shaikh

Image
Apart from being an MPH student, I also enjoy cooking my cultural dishes and spending and sharing it with my friends. The idea of the MPH potluck came about after a couple of my colleagues and friends were graduating in the spring of 2018 and I wanted to do something special so that we can all celebrate together. Throughout the past two years I have spent many long hours with them completing projects and just enjoying our time together. So, I really wanted to do something special so that they can have a celebration since it was there last semester at Hofstra. That's where the idea of the potluck came from and I teamed up with my friend Alana to work together to promote a successful event.  To get the plan started, we made a potluck flyer and Victoria helped us with sending it out to every student and faculty member in the MPH program. The flyers gave everyone the option to bring in a cultural dish as well. Our potluck was held on May third and we decorated one of th

The Delta Omega Public Health Honor Society Presents: Public Health Career Panel and Roundtable by Alice Daniel

Image
Delta Omega Honorary Society, Hofstra University Public health is a diverse and growing field that provides opportunities to work in a variety of settings including hospitals, schools, and community organizations. As a graduate student in Hofstra’s Public Health program, I consider the field to be an exciting one. However, I often feel overwhelmed by the job search process. Fortunately, I was able to attend Hofstra’s Public Health Career Panel and Roundtable event which gave me the chance to listen, ask, and interact with professionals working in core disciplines of the public health field. The session began with each practitioner briefly describing their area of work in public health. I then had the chance to interact with the panelists and ask questions regarding the job search process, interview and resume advice, and whether their public health coursework was applicable in a professional work environment. During the discussion, I learned about the importance of networking dur

Delta Omega Honorary Society was founded in 1924 and currently includes 100 chapters with over 20,000 members throughout the United States and Puerto Rico. Membership in Delta Omega reflects the dedication of an individual to quality in the field of public health and to protecting and advancing the health of all people. The Delta Kappa Chapter of the Delta Omega Honorary Society at Hofstra connects public health students, alumni, and faculty to recognize and develop leadership that advances and sustains the public's health. Being inducted into the Public health honor society has been a great honor and I am truly honored to be recognized with all of the other amazing members of Delta Omega. Last year I had read about the Delta Omega Honor Society on Hofstra’s Public Health page and became interested so I researched the criteria for membership but I wasn’t sure if I would qualify. This year I was pleasantly surprised when I received an email informing me about the opportunity
