PULSE Patient Safety Education Symposium by Krima Thakker
On May 4th 2018, PULSE organization
had organized a Patient Safety Education Symposium. This symposium focused on
educating the healthcare providers and caregivers the importance of patient
education and patient safety. The Keynote speakers for this event comprised of
Michael R. Cohen, RPh, MS, ScD (hon), DPS (hon)
Bruce E. Hirsch MD, FACP, AAHIVS
Edward Pollak, M.D.
Anthony J. Santella, DrPH, MPH, Adv Cert, MCHES
The main topic of discussion focused on the increase in the
case of opioid crisis and the lack of knowledge that people possessed about the
drug administration regimen. The caregivers discussed about their hassles and
barriers in providing optimum care to the patients. Dr. Bruce E. Hirsch, a
physician in the Infectious Disease department of Northwell Health brought
forward an interesting topic of Educating the patient to diagnose or identify
their own symptoms. Understanding your own body is a better approach to help
the physician in the diagnosis and treatment procedures.
The second half of the event consisted of small table
discussions and rotations where members from each organization were given a
chance to interact and conversate with any of the two keynote speakers. These
discussions were 30 minutes each and at the end of it, the volunteers and note
keepers from each table presented their views. The primary aim for this
symposium consisted of introducing a grant opportunity to the healthcare
providers and the organizations to expand in terms of patient safety, education
and experience.
