MPH Potluck Spring 2018 by Mobeen Shaikh

Apart from being an MPH student, I also enjoy cooking my cultural dishes and spending and sharing it with my friends. The idea of the MPH potluck came about after a couple of my colleagues and friends were graduating in the spring of 2018 and I wanted to do something special so that we can all celebrate together. Throughout the past two years I have spent many long hours with them completing projects and just enjoying our time together. So, I really wanted to do something special so that they can have a celebration since it was there last semester at Hofstra. That's where the idea of the potluck came from and I teamed up with my friend Alana to work together to promote a successful event.

To get the plan started, we made a potluck flyer and Victoria helped us with sending it out to every student and faculty member in the MPH program. The flyers gave everyone the option to bring in a cultural dish as well. Our potluck was held on May third and we decorated one of the MPH classrooms with banners and flyers to set a welcoming atmosphere. We made a variety of cultural dished as well as a dessert table with cookies, cupcakes and a beautiful cake. Cultural dishes such as Biryani rice, tandoori chicken, spinach, Naan bread, Dahl roti and curry Beef as well as many other snacks such as beef patties, plantains and chips and dip as well.

An average of 35 people attended the Potluck celebration including faculty, staff and students. Everyone enjoyed the event and the wonderful dinner and we had the opportunity to spend a few memorable hours with her friends and faculty and take pictures as well. We received wonderful feedbacks from the MPH program as well as from our friends and colleagues.
Bringing people together and spending time together helped us to create priceless memories that will last a lifetime. This event will also help us to remember our MPH student’s experience with laughter and joy. This event would not be possible without the support of our faculty, so we just want to express our sincere gratitude to the MPH program faculty and staff for supporting us with planning this event and making it a success.

Thank you,
 Mobeen and Alana
