The Delta Omega Public Health Honor Society Presents: Public Health Career Panel and Roundtable by Alice Daniel
Delta Omega Honorary Society, Hofstra University |
Public health is a
diverse and growing field that provides opportunities to work in a variety of
settings including hospitals, schools, and community organizations. As a
graduate student in Hofstra’s Public Health program, I consider the field to be
an exciting one. However, I often feel overwhelmed by the job search process.
Fortunately, I was able to attend Hofstra’s Public Health Career Panel and
Roundtable event which gave me the chance to listen, ask, and interact with professionals
working in core disciplines of the public health field. The session began with each
practitioner briefly describing their area of work in public health. I then had
the chance to interact with the panelists and ask questions regarding the job search
process, interview and resume advice, and whether their public health
coursework was applicable in a professional work environment. During the
discussion, I learned about the importance of networking during public health
events and internships. Each panelist also explained the importance of public
health courses such as program planning and evaluation, epidemiology, and
biostatistics in their professional work. Overall, I believe the session
equipped me with the knowledge, advice, and tools that I could apply to the
public health job application process.
