Hofstra MPH Newsletter, 2018-2019 (Volume 9)
Greetings from the MPH Director
Dr. Isma H. Chaudhry, MD., MPH
Welcome to the 2018-19 academic year edition (Volume 9) of
the Hofstra MPH newsletter, The Bridge.
We are excited to welcome all our MPH and Advanced
Certificate students to the Fall and Spring Semesters. The MPH at Hofstra
offers a distinctly interdisciplinary approach to Public Health through an
enriched academic curriculum. We are a highly respected accredited MPH program
on Long Island, and we are proud of our alumni who have successfully made their
mark as accomplished academics and successful Public Health Practitioners. Our
new 12sh Advanced Certificate in Foundations of Public Health is intended for professionals working in a public health
agency or organization, or professionals in a related health or human services
field who wish to gain a specific set of skills and evidence-based approaches
used in the profession of public health.
We had another successful year, and are excited to share
some of the accomplishments of our faculty, alumni, and students.
All three full-time MPH faculty, working together with
students and alumni, had abstracts accepted for presentation at the APHA
conference in San Diego, this November. Our full-time and adjunct practitioner
faculty also published on their important research in elite academic journals.
Six graduating MPH students presented their final
culminating experience projects in August on intriguing topics such as: the
role of libraries as community health education partners; the importance of
expanding provider training in HPV vaccine; tackling infant mortality in Nassau
County; Addressing Medication Discrepancies Among Elderly
Patients; identifying strategies for increasing adherence to
well-child visits.
We are welcoming a new full-time faculty member to the MPH
program this Fall, Chanapong Rojanaworarit, DDS, Ph.D., MPH. Dr.
Rojanaworarit will be teaching our Epidemiology and Biostatistics
classes.
We are excited to share that Ms. Karli Hagedorn, Chair Sands
Point Preserve Conservancy, and Farms for City Kids Foundation and a Board
Member CorpsAfrica will be joining our Community Advisory Board.
We welcome Ms. Karla Williams, Senior Executive Secretary to
our team.
This Fall we will be welcoming 23 students from diverse
backgrounds who will bring cultural and scholastic enrichment to our public
health programs. We have 7 students with advanced degrees (MD., JD.) enrolled
in our program.
In addition to other events in the works, the MPH program
will be hosting internationally known public health pediatrician Dr. Irwin
Redlener on October 22 from 4:30-6:20pm to hear about his new
book The Future of Us: What the Dreams of Children Mean for 21st Century
America.
We encourage our new students to get involved with the
Society of Public Health Associates (SOFHA). Dr. Martine Hackett will continue
as the faculty advisor to SOPHA. Please stay tuned for exciting news and
information from SOPHA. Those who are close
to graduating can stay involved with our dynamic community of scholar-advocates
by joining Hofstra’s Public Health Alumni Association (PHAA). Dr. Corinne
Kyriacou serves as PHAA faculty advisor and can answer any questions you may
have about this organization.
The success of our program is in our highly accomplished
faculty that is committed to preparing our students to identify, research and
address the ever-evolving challenges in Public Health practice at local,
national and global levels. Our faculty is dedicated to providing consistent,
high-quality academic advising and mentoring to ensure that each and every
student enrolled in our program achieves their academic goals.
We are proud of our partnerships with stakeholders from
Academia and community organizations. These partnerships open opportunities for
internships and public health engagements for our students and alumni. Stay
tuned for more from the MPH hub.
I wish you a productive and rewarding year ahead.
