Interview with Dr. Bhurosy

Dr. Trishnee Bhurosy is the newest faculty member of Hofstra University’s Master of Public Health Program. Dr. Bhurosy’s program of research studies the effectiveness of strategies and tools that can be integrated with behavioral interventions to improve nutrition with the active involvement of community stakeholders. She was born and raised in Mauritius, a beautiful island on the southeast coast of Madagascar. In 2012, she graduated from her undergraduate studies with a degree in Nutritional Sciences and earned a masters in the same field in 2013. Soon after, she began teaching high school students along while working part-time at the University of Mauritius teaching various health topics related to nutrition, food safety, and occupational health. After working and conducting research for some time, and lacking a solid mentorship in behavioral sciences, Dr. Bhurosy decided it was time to pursue her research through a doctoral program. It was a tough decision as she had never thought of leaving her family. However, she decided to follow her heart and browse for Ph.D. programs after a year of contemplating her departure from Mauritius. While doing her masters, Dr. Bhurosy had read research articles in behavioral science and nutrition by Dr. Susan E. Middlestadt—a professor at Indiana University (IU). After much thought, Dr. Bhurosy decided to contact Dr. Middlestadt to ask more about doing a doctoral research degree at IU. What felt as if it was by chance, Dr. Middlestadt wrote back asking if she [Dr. Bhurosy] wanted to come to the United States and work with her. Shortly afterward, Dr. Bhurosy came to the United States to attend IU and obtain her Ph.D. in Health Behavior. After completing her Ph.D. in 2019, Dr. Bhurosy acquired a full-time research position at the Rutgers Cancer Institute of New Jersey (CINJ), a National Cancer Institute-designated comprehensive cancer center. After completing her postdoctoral fellowship at CINJ and while she appreciated the full-time research position, she realized that she wanted to pursue both mentoring and teaching alongside doing research. This led to her accepting a tenure-track Assistant Professor position at Hofstra University in 2021. Dr. Bhurosy currently lives on Long Island with her husband, Dr. Duke, and cat, Dr. Doom, also lovingly known as Patoufie which is a Mauritian made-up name for someone cute and chubby. The three of them love to hike together and cook delicious meals. On-campus, Dr. Bhurosy is very passionate about improving students’ access to nutritious food and is currently collaborating with Hofstra students, faculty, and staff to improve upon the issue of food insecurity at Hofstra. One of the most recent projects that Dr. Bhurosy has been working on is to open a food pantry in Hofstra Dome and expand on the free grab and go snacks program that her colleagues, Dr. Kyriacou, Diane McPartland, and Irina Sepulveda initiated in the dome. Dr. Bhurosy hopes to address food insecurity among Hofstra University students on a larger scale through both her research and service to the immediate community.
