MPH Symposium Spring 2020

Although we shifted gears for this semester and held a virtual MPH symposium instead of the traditional in-person event, our 14 graduating students were still able to present on their final Integrative Learning Experience projects in the “presence” of their friends, families, faculty and classmates.  We had a great turnout for our virtual symposium, held on May 7, 2020, with opening remarks from our Vice Provost for Graduate and Undergraduate Affairs – Dr. Elfreda Blue and our Dean from the School of Health Professions and Human Services – Dr. Holly Seriup.  I appreciated what these university leaders had to say, highlighting the relevance of the public research the students worked so hard on, and the importance of moving forward into the field of public health. Topics like Burnout and Depression among Medical Residents is something that so many health professionals are experiencing, especially right now during the pandemic where individuals are working long hours and putting themselves at risk to care for sick patients. There are so many questions I have about how the pandemic will change how we look at the public health workforce; I am eager to see how my graduating classmates will find ways to better protect our communities, and the people who serve them.  The graduating students who presented on May 7th were: Sabreen Bhuiya; Audie Damon, Salma Haider, Brittany Hobbie; Maryam Khan; Christian King; Priya Patel; Alex Retundie; Briana Rice; Alexandra Rizzatti; Elise Rooney; Veronica Scott; Shivali Vashisht; and Anika Zaman.

Welcoming the New Faculty – Dr. Chanapong Rojanaworarit, Assistant Professor, Department of Health Professions, School of Health Professions and Human Services

Dr. Chanapong Rojanaworarit is joining Hofstra University’s MPH program as an assistant professor in the Department of Health Professions, School of Health Professions and Human Services. Dr. Rojanaworarit is a doctor of dental surgery with an MPH in health system development and a PhD in Public health. He also completed a post-doctoral research fellowship in the department of Environmental Medicine and Public Health at the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai, New York. He has worked as a dentist since 2007. He has also taught epidemiology since 2013 as a lecturer in the Department of Epidemiology, Faculty of Public Health, Mahidol University, Thailand.   He has experience in teaching several courses at master and doctoral levels including principles of epidemiology, statistical methods in epidemiology, public health research methodology, oral epidemiology, and dental public health. He also served as a member of executive committee for Master of Public Health Program

PHAA Alumni Spotlight : Dr. Johanna Andrews (MPH '14)

                                                                         Dr. Johanna E. Andrews is a Social and Behavioral Health Researcher and a proud graduate of the first graduating class of Hofstra’s Master of Public (MPH) program. She has over ten years of experience conducting interdisciplinary research studies and leading diverse research teams at the academic and health system level. Her research focuses on racial and ethnic health disparities, food insecurity, healthy food access for communities of color, and stress and coping processes for persons of color in the United States. Dr. Andrews received a B.S. in Biology and a minor in Chemistry from Hofstra University. Her desire to lead community and population health interventions led her to the MPH degree. After conducting informational interviews with various public health professionals, including Hofstra’s MPH Program Director Dr. Corinne Kyriacou, she discerned that this degree was a perfect fit for her and subsequently
