Run for Charity, Run for Health – Hofstra NPHW 2018 5K Charity Run by Tracey Tran

Every year during National Public Health Week (NPHW), the American Public Health Association challenges their members and public health community to take part in the 1 Billion Step Challenge to a healthier life. As a student organization at Hofstra, we decided to take on that challenge. For the past two years, we have held a Charity 5K Fun Run and Walk to kick off NPHW. The theme of our run has always been to promote a healthy and active lifestyle, despite any adversity. As a member for one year and on the Executive Board for the second year, I had the opportunity to be a part of the planning of the event. It was such a great event to be a part of. From recruiting participants, to working with community members on and off Hofstra’s campus, it was amazing to see the efforts placed by everybody in promoting the event and the vision that was established. What was even more rewarding was seeing the final product. We had around 40 active participants running for the noble cause. This helped us raise a generous sum of approximately $1,000 towards the good cause. This past event, we chose to donate our proceeds to was GlobalGiving, which connects donors to grassroots projects working to improve communities all over the world. I am so grateful to be have been a part of these events for the last two years and I hope to continue to be able to support them.
