NPHW Keynote Presentation by Dr. Howard Zucker by Utsavi Kapadia, MPH ‘18

What is Public Health? According to the American Public Health Association (APHA), public health is the promotion and protection of the health of the people and communities where they live, work, and play. In order to make people aware about the importance of public health and healthy lifestyle this year National Public Health Week was fortunate to have a well-known public health scholar-advocate-practitioner as the keynote speaker: Dr. Howard Zucker, New York State Health Department as a Commissioner.
Youth experience many personal and health challenges as they develop and these challenges may contribute toward their health outcomes. Health problems include but are not limited to excessive alcohol, smoking, drugs, which can lead to addiction, poor health and even death. Steps should be taken to make them aware about cessation of smoking. Dr. Zucker spoke about the extensive advertising campaign by the New York State Department of Health to help spread awareness hoping to have some positive impact. Those advertisements educate about how smoking destroys your overall health and leads to death causing respiratory problems and lung cancer. Lung cancer is the leading cause of deaths from smoking in the United States. Positive advertisements about motivation for teens to quit smoking were shown. The effectiveness of antismoking messaging depends on behavior of the smoker. Even the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) has added resources into an intensive ad campaign called “Tips from Former Smoker”. There are so many negative advertisements also which stop teens to quit smoking but motivating and positive advertisements make great impact.

The same technique is used to fight the drug epidemic. Drug use is prevalent and has harmful effects. It shunts their growth and ability to work which can ultimately lead to nation’s decreased growth and retardation. Dr. Zucker also provided the audience with a viewing of an ad titled “Your Brain on Drug Policy". It was the largest and successful ad campaign ever. The ad demonstrates the effect of drugs like heroin, cocaine on your brain and how it leaves you destroyed. So, eliminate harmful habits from your life and stay fit and healthy!
